Together We Dance: A Dance Showcase Celebrating International Dance Day
Sunday, April 29 from 1-3pm at Memorial Park
On a chilly sunny Sunday afternoon, I attended Together We Dance, an event in honour of International Dance Day. Appearing on stage were dancers from across Oshawa to display the diversity and excellence of Dance. This event aim to bring together dancers and advocate for the art of dance and movement and highlight the medium’s creative, expressive and technical capacities.
Participating artists include:
Anishinaabe Knowledge Keepers – Kim Wheatley and Alexandria Bipatnath
Kim & Alex will demonstrate Women’s Traditional and Fancy Shawl dancing which are typical Pow Wow dance styles seen across North America.
They are Ojibway from Shawanaga First Nation and dance to honour all of Creation. The Traditional Regalia they wear represents a visual narrative of their beliefs, relationships, ceremonial practices & customs that honour the past present and future.
City of Oshawa Dance Programs
The City of Oshawa offers a range of dance programs for all ages. Classes include Ballet, Hip Hop, Salsa, Zumba and much more.

Chandrasegara Dance Academy – Tamil Cultural and Academic Society of Durham (TCASD) Tamil Cultural and Academic Society of Durham (TCASD) is a registered non- profit and non-political organization operating in the Durham Region since 2008. The primary focus of this organization is to provide youth and young children opportunities to engage in activities that will improve their knowledge about rich Tamil culture and traditions at the same note educate other communities about our culture, excel in academic endeavours and involve in community events.
Dance Performance: “Pushpanjali”
Pushpanjali literally means folded hands full of flowers. It is an offering of flowers to the Gods and is the first dance in a Bharatha Natyam performance. It is the salutation to the lord of dance Nataraja, the Guru, the musicians and the audience. We will also see Kanapathi Vanakkam and Amuthe Thamil to begin today’s event on an auspicious note.
Kalavriksha Dance Centre trained by Neeraja Ramani
Students of Kalavriksha Dance Centre trained by Neeraja Ramani will be presenting Indian dance, Bharatanatyam. Bharatanatyam is a classical Indian dance form. This dance form has intricate footwork, elaborate expressions and hand gestures that tell stories and convey emotions, with lyrical music that is composed of melodies and rhythmic patterns.
Dance Performance: “Alamelu Manga”
This dance is about a teenager who is dancing by herself while her friends & Lord Vishnu watch her. Choreographed by Leela Samson.
Loreley Youth Dancers
Loreley Youth Dancers grew from its humble beginnings in 1970 teaching traditional German dances. They are known throughout the Region for both their traditional German and jazz performances.
Dance Performance: Loreley Youth Dancers Junior and Senior groups will be performing Maypole and Polka dances.
Maxwell Heights Secondary School
Maxwell Heights Secondary School Dance program prides itself on teaching students so much more than dance moves! It’s about commitment, dedication, reliability and pushing yourself to be the BEST version of you.

The Bisland Dance Centre Inc is conveniently located just North East of the Oshawa Centre at 360 King Street West, BDC has students from all over the Durham region who train in our beautiful facility and are a part of the BDC family. The Humming Bird Dancers of Club Carib of Oshawa Inc
The Humming Bird Dancers of Club Carib of Oshawa Inc are a group of children ranging from age 3-18 who all share a similar passion, dance. Their choreographer, Martin Scott Pascall, teaches them various dances consisting of Jazz, Latin, Folk, Spiritual, African, Hip-Hop and Calypso.

The Odessa Ukrainian Dancers
The Odessa Ukrainian Dancers comprised of a group of energetic high-school students, has flourished for more than three generations at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Oshawa, Ontario.
Their repertoire includes dances from the Central, Hutzul, Transcarpathian, Bukovinian and Polissian regions. Odessa strives to retain the beauty and true spirit of Ukrainian dance by focusing on traditional choreography with authentic costuming.
The Odessa Ukrainian Dancers have performed at Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin Manitoba, Ukrainian Independence Day celebrations, Canada Day celebrations, Fiesta, Kingston Ukrainian Festival, and for the Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada.
Dance Performance: The Loreley Youth Dancers Junior and Senior groups
Groups will perform a Polka and a Maypole dance more specifically:Choboty, Zaporozhetz, and Poltava Polka.
Oshawa Senior Citizen Centre – Line 4 Dance Level
Oshawa Senior Citizen Centre – Line 4 Dance Level is led by Donna Davidson at the John Street location, group members learn steps to a variety of dances. Level 4 dancers are very experienced as they have completed all previous levels to join the group!
